Phil Garnock-Jones
Born in Liverpool, England, Phil has lived in Aotearoa since age five. He grew up in Linden, just north of Wellington, and studied botany at Victoria University and University of Canterbury.
First working for the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research at Lincoln, and later as Professor of Botany at Victoria University of Wellington, his scientific career of botanical research specialised in weeds and hebes. His research work is published in over 100 scientific papers and book chapters. Now he has retired to Nelson, he focuses on creative non-fiction and memoir. Phil is still conducting original research in flower biology and plant classification. With a love of photography, his forthcoming illustrated book for Auckland University Press describes and explains the flowers of 100 native New Zealand plants. When not writing, Phil is a keen but lazy gardener planting up a steep hillside in Atawhai. He also plays guitar, walks, and is interested in carpentry, bookbinding, and researching his UK family history. |
