Our Annual Short Story Competition
NOW UPGRADED TO TE TAUIHU AWARDS

Between 2007 and 2021, the NZSA Top of the South Branch organised an annual Short Story Competition jointly sponsored with Page & Blackmore Booksellers of Nelson.

This national competition was judged by a different, noted New Zealand writer each year and all entrants received written feedback on the stories submitted. Past judges are Rajorshi Chakraborti, Mandy Hager, Alan Carter, Catherine Chidgey, Kevin Ireland, Tina Shaw, Ted Dawe, Graeme Lay, Brigid Lowry, Gavin Bishop, Carl Nixon, David Hill and Fiona Kidman.

In 2022, the short story competition was reformatted to the Te Tauihu Short Story Awards in association with Wakatū Incorporation. Page & Blackmore are gold sponsors of the new awards.
Winning and short-listed stories in the Page & Blackmore short story competition have been published in printed biennial anthologies which included poems that were displayed in the window of Page & Blackmore Booksellers.

Earlier volumes of Horizons are out of print. The stories from the 2021 and 2020 competitions are published in Horizons 5, still available to buy online.
